Wood Technology

Course Description: 

This is an introductory course in woodworking. Topics of study include: safety, history, materials, assembly and finishing. Using the design process, students will design, plan and complete a project.

Course Standards: 

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in the proper set up and safe operation of machines in the woodworking lab.
  2. Understand the design process: Including; defining a problem, brainstorming, researching and generating ideas, identifying criteria and specifying constraints, exploring possibilities, selecting an approach, developing a design proposal, making a model or prototype, testing and evaluating the design, refining the design, creating or making it, and communicating processes and results.
  3. Solve simple real-world and mathematical problems associated to material and project cost estimation.
  4. Identify and properly locate, fabricate and apply them in the manufacture of an individual project.
  5. Select, prepare and apply the proper surface finish based on project function.

Introduction to Computer Aided Drafting

Course Description: 

Introduction to Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) is designed to give students a fundamental knowledge of how to describe the shape and size of an object or structure to accepted international standards.

Students will be introduced to basic concepts in 2D and 3D solid models. Dimensioning techniques and multiview drawing will also be covered. Concepts of architectural drawing will also be introduced. The major focus of this section of the course is a long-term project that involves the development of a local property site. As you learn about various aspects of architecture, you will apply what you learn to the design and development of this property.

In addition, you will use Inventor and Revit, which are state of the art 3D design software packages from AutoDesk, to help you design solutions to solve your major course project. Learn about documenting your project, solving problems, and communicating your solutions to others.

Course Standards:

  1. Students will develop the abilities to apply the design process.
  2. Students will develop an understanding of the characteristics and scope of technology.
  3. Students will develop an understanding of manufacturing practices and technical drawings associated with the manufacturing of items.
  4. Students will develop an understanding of construction practices and building materials for residential construction.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge and use of the technical skills of the art form, integrating technology when applicable.
